For most of modern history, political systems have been built around the assumption that human beings, rather than territory, rulers, or abstract notions of progress, are the central subjects of governance. Laws, economies, and institutions have been justified, at least in theory, by their obligation to protect human life, manage conflict, and improve collective wellbeing over time. Even when unevenly applied, this principle imposed an ethical constraint on power, requiring political authority to answer, however imperfectly, to human needs and consent.

 

Today, that assumption is rapidly eroding. A small group of technology elites increasingly speak and act as if humanity itself is provisional, a stage to be surpassed rather than a condition to be preserved. This belief is no longer confined to speculative philosophy. It is shaping how AI is built, how labour is governed, how inequality is rationalised, and how long-term political authority is imagined. The result is not merely a clash of ideas, but an emerging institutional crisis, in which decisions affecting billions are guided by a worldview that has never been democratically endorsed.

A Future Where Humanity Is Optional

To understand the political consequences of this shift, it is first necessary to understand the worldview driving it. Many of today’s most influential technology leaders openly frame the future as one in which biological humans are no longer central. Elon Musk has repeatedly argued that humanity must expand beyond Earth to avoid extinction, presenting space colonisation as a moral imperative rather than a strategic choice. He has suggested that the long-term survival of intelligence outweighs the immediate needs of people alive today.

 

This orientation is not unique to Musk. Peter Thiel, one of Silicon Valley’s most influential figures, has explicitly questioned the compatibility of democracy with technological progress, saying that he no longer believes freedom and democracy are compatible. He has promoted visions of exit from democratic governance through private cities, space settlement, and technological acceleration, while expressing nostalgia for hierarchical social orders.

 

At face value, this emphasis on long-term survival and future-oriented progress sounds innocent. Few would argue that future generations should be ignored. However, this framing subtly shifts moral priorities. If the preservation of intelligence in the distant future becomes the highest good, then present suffering can be reframed as a necessary sacrifice. Environmental damage, labour exploitation, and political instability become acceptable costs in service of a much longer timeline. In practice, this logic allows powerful actors to downplay immediate harms while insisting that they are acting responsibly on behalf of humanity’s ultimate destiny.

Similarly, leaders in the AI sector frequently describe a coming world in which machine systems outperform humans across most domains. Sam Altman has warned that future AI systems could be “the most powerful technology ever created by humanity,” while simultaneously insisting that their development must continue at speed. The implicit message is clear. Advanced systems are inevitable, and delaying them may be more dangerous than accelerating them. Consequently, political decisions are framed around managing future superhuman risks rather than addressing current social damage.

 

In this framing, human beings are no longer treated as the primary purpose of governance, but as a temporary stage in a longer technological trajectory. As a result, democratic priorities tied to protection, welfare, and accountability lose urgency, while social costs are justified in the name of advancing intelligence itself. This is not a speculative concern; these assumptions already shape how emerging technologies are governed, regulated, and deployed.

 

Across the United States, the United Kingdom, and parts of Europe, AI regulation increasingly prioritises hypothetical future threats over present harms. Policymakers devote significant attention to scenarios in which advanced systems escape human control, while far less effort is directed toward regulating surveillance, workplace automation, or algorithmic discrimination that already affect millions.

 

As a result, regulatory frameworks often focus on what AI might become rather than what it already is. This approach reflects the influence of industry leaders who argue that future risks are existential, while present harms are manageable. Yet this framing conveniently aligns with corporate incentives. It allows companies to continue deploying systems that reshape labour markets, extract data, and concentrate power, all while presenting themselves as responsible stewards guarding against distant catastrophe.

 

Moreover, corporate governance structures actively reinforce this imbalance. Companies such as OpenAI continue to present themselves as acting in the interest of humanity as a whole, yet recent internal developments reveal how commercial pressure increasingly shapes what knowledge is produced, shared, or suppressed. Recently, multiple researchers resigned after saying that the company had become more guarded about publishing findings highlighting AI’s potential negative economic effects.

 

At the same time, internal memos declaring a companywide “code red” to defend ChatGPT’s market position underscored the intensity of competitive pressure facing the firm. Together, these incidents show how ethical reflection becomes increasingly conditional when it collides with the demands of scale, speed, and capital accumulation. Rather than restraining power, governance structures adapt to protect growth, revealing how claims of serving humanity are subordinated to the imperatives of technological dominance.

 

In addition, companies operating at the intersection of AI, defence, and surveillance reveal how post-human thinking influences state power. Palantir, whose software is used extensively by military and security agencies, presents itself as a defender of Western civilisation. Its CEO, Alex Karp, has openly praised the role of organised violence in shaping global order. He has argued that constitutional constraints on warfare create business opportunities for companies like his, since more precise violence requires more advanced technological systems.

 

In this context, political authority shifts from elected institutions to private platforms. Governments increasingly rely on corporate infrastructure for data analysis, surveillance, and military decision-making. Once embedded, these systems shape how states understand threats, allocate resources, and exercise force. When the architects of such systems believe that humanity itself is an interim stage, the implications for democratic governance are profound.

 

Additionally, space infrastructure shows this transformation. Private companies, such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX, now control satellite networks that are essential for communication, navigation, and military coordination. These systems are not governed through international treaties in the same way as earlier space technologies. Instead, they are subject to the strategic preferences of a handful of firms. When those firms prioritise a future beyond Earth, planetary governance becomes aligned with long-term technological ambition rather than present human security.

The Erosion of Democratic Legitimacy

The cumulative effect of these developments is an emerging legitimacy crisis. Democratic systems are built on the premise that political authority derives from the consent of the governed. Yet many of the most consequential decisions about AI, bioengineering, and space infrastructure are being made without meaningful public input. Worse still, they are guided by assumptions that conflict with the values of democratic societies.

 

This crisis becomes visible when examining whose interests are deprioritised. Workers subjected to algorithmic management experience declining autonomy and increasing surveillance. Content moderators, often based in the Global South, are exposed to extreme psychological harm in order to “train” safer systems for users elsewhere. Communities targeted by predictive policing tools face heightened scrutiny and discrimination.

 

Nevertheless, political discourse remains dominated by speculative scenarios involving runaway AI or distant civilisational collapse. This imbalance allows companies to deflect responsibility. When confronted with evidence of harm, they point to their efforts to prevent far greater dangers in the future.

 

Environmental damage follows a similar pattern. The energy demands of large-scale AI systems are immense, contributing to rising emissions and water consumption. In response, technology leaders often argue that advanced AI may eventually help solve climate change. This reasoning treats present ecological harm as a temporary inconvenience on the path to a technologically optimised future. It also shifts the burden of risk onto populations that contribute least to emissions while benefiting least from technological growth.

 

Reproductive governance is also affected by this worldview. As technologies emerge that allow greater control over reproduction and genetic traits, tech capitalists frame human reproduction as an optimisation problem. While these discussions are often couched in the language of health and progress, they risk reinforcing inequality by privileging those who can afford access to enhancement technologies. In this framing, human diversity becomes a flaw to be corrected rather than a social reality to be protected.

 

Furthermore, inequality itself is subtly reinterpreted. When future intelligence is prioritised over present wellbeing, disparities in wealth and power can be rationalised as necessary investments. Musk’s dismissive attitude toward the human costs of lithium mining, alongside his failure to follow through on commitments to address global hunger, reflects this logic. Immediate suffering is minimised because it does not align with the long-term narrative of civilisational advancement.

Taken together, these trends weaken the moral foundations of democratic governance. Citizens are increasingly governed by systems designed according to values they did not choose, for futures they may never inhabit. Political participation becomes symbolic, while real authority migrates toward tech titans who claim to understand the trajectory of intelligence better than the public.

 

Therefore, the central challenge is whether democratic societies are willing to contest the assumptions shaping their technological future. If governance continues to be guided by a belief that humans are merely transitional, the social contract will be quietly and rapidly rewritten without consent. But if societies insist that technology exists to serve living people, rather than replace them, the political trajectory can still be redirected. Ultimately, the struggle is not between humans and machines, but between democratic accountability and a future increasingly shaped by the preferences of a small group of unelected technology billionaires.
